Bonfire Night 2026: Your Guide to Displays, Safety and the Fireworks Rules

Remember, remember the fifth of November. In 2026, Bonfire Night falls on a Thursday, so many towns will hold their displays on the weekends before and after.

Here's how to enjoy it safely, whether you're going to a display or having fireworks at home.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

Bonfire Night marks the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and others planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. People lit bonfires to celebrate the King's survival, and the tradition has continued for more than 400 years.

Go to an organised display

An organised display is the safest, and often the cheapest, way to see fireworks. Many are run by councils, schools and charities. Check your local council's website, local news and social media. Book tickets early, as popular displays sell out, and tickets bought online are sometimes cheaper.

The UK fireworks rules

  • You must be 18 or over to buy fireworks.
  • Buy from a registered seller, and check fireworks carry the correct safety markings.
  • There's a curfew. You can't set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night (midnight), New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year (1am).
  • Don't set off fireworks in the street or other public places.

Safety tips for fireworks at home

  • Read the instructions on every firework, using a torch if needed.
  • Light fireworks at arm's length with a taper, then stand well back.
  • Never go back to a firework once it's lit, even if it hasn't gone off.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby.
  • Give children gloves for sparklers, and put used sparklers in a bucket of water. Sparklers aren't recommended for under-fives.
  • Never drink alcohol if you're setting off fireworks.
  • Tell your neighbours, especially if they have pets.

Don't forget the pets

Fireworks can be very frightening for animals. Read our guide to keeping pets calm during fireworks.
