Fireworks and Pets: How to Keep Your Dog or Cat Calm on Bonfire Night
Bonfire Night can be scary for pets. Simple steps to keep your dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig calm and safe during fireworks.
For many pets, fireworks season is the most stressful time of the year. The loud bangs and bright flashes can be frightening, and fireworks often go on for weeks around Bonfire Night, Diwali and New Year.
Here's how to help your pet feel safer.
Before the fireworks start
- Check local displays so you know which nights will be noisy.
- Walk your dog before dark, so they don't need to go out once the fireworks start.
- Make a safe den. A quiet corner with blankets, or a covered crate with the door open, gives your pet somewhere to hide.
- Check microchip details are up to date, in case your pet runs off in a panic.
- Speak to your vet early if your pet is very scared. They can suggest options, and there are longer-term training programmes that can help.

On fireworks night
- Keep pets indoors, and keep doors, windows and cat flaps closed.
- Close the curtains and turn on the TV or some music to mask the bangs.
- Let them hide. Don't try to pull a hiding pet out.
- Stay calm and act normally. Your pet takes cues from you. It's fine to comfort them if they come to you.
- Never punish a scared pet. It only makes the fear worse.
- Don't take your dog to a fireworks display.
Rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets
If your small pets live outside, partly cover their hutch with blankets to block the flashes and muffle the noise, but leave space for air. Add extra bedding to burrow into. If you can, bring the hutch into a quiet shed, garage or room indoors.
Common questions
How do I know if my pet is scared of fireworks?
Signs include shaking, panting, hiding, barking or whining, pacing, trying to escape, and toileting indoors. Cats often hide or stop eating.
Should I comfort my dog during fireworks?
Yes, if they come to you. Calm, gentle comfort is fine. Just try to stay relaxed yourself.
When is Bonfire Night 2026?
Bonfire Night is on Thursday 5 November 2026. Many displays also take place on the weekends before and after.
Can my vet help?
Yes. Your vet can advise on calming products, medication where appropriate, and training to reduce fear over time. Ask well before fireworks season.
