Most of us know we should walk more. But when it's dark at five o'clock and raining sideways, a brisk walk round the block is a hard sell. That's why walking pads have become so popular: a slim, quiet treadmill you can use in front of the TV, or even under your desk while you work.

Merach is a home fitness brand with a UK store. We've picked two of its walking pads and one folding treadmill, and explained which one suits which home.

Walking pad or treadmill: what's the difference?

  • Walking pad: a low, slim deck with no tall handrail, made for walking at up to about 4mph. It slides under a sofa or bed, and it can sit under a standing desk.
  • Folding treadmill: has a handrail and console, and goes faster, so you can jog or run. It folds up, but it takes more room than a walking pad.

What to look for in a walking pad

  • Where it will go. Measure the floor space, and the space under your sofa or bed if you plan to store it there. If you'll use it under a desk, check your desk rises high enough.
  • Speed. Most people walk at 2 to 3.5mph. If you want to jog, you need a treadmill that goes faster, like the T12B1.
  • Incline. Walking uphill works your legs harder and burns more energy without needing to go faster. An automatic incline changes at the press of a button.
  • Noise. If you live in a flat or work on calls, look for a quiet brushless motor, and use a mat underneath.
  • Weight limit. Check the maximum user weight, and choose a model with some room to spare.
  • Deck size. A wider deck feels safer and more natural, especially when you're looking at a screen.

What do customers say about Merach UK?

There isn't much independent feedback on Merach's UK store yet, with only a small number of reviews on Trustpilot. Because a walking pad is a bigger purchase, we'd suggest paying by credit card or PayPal, checking the box for damage when it arrives, and keeping the packaging until you're sure you're happy, so you can use the 30-day returns window if you need to.

So, which one should you buy?

Go for the UltraWalk W60 Plus if you want to walk while you work, with a wide deck and quiet motor.

Go for the T25 if you want steep incline walking for less money.

Go for the T12B1 if you'd like a handrail and the option to jog, at the lowest price.

Tips for using a walking pad

  • Start slowly. Begin at 1.5 to 2mph and build up over a week or two.
  • Wear proper trainers. Walking in socks or slippers isn't safe or comfortable.
  • Use the safety key or remote. Keep the stop button within reach at all times.
  • Keep it clean. Wipe the deck and vacuum underneath, as dust and pet hair can affect the belt.
  • Look after the belt. Follow the manual for belt tension and lubrication.

Common questions

Can you lose weight with a walking pad?

Regular walking is a great way to move more, and a walking pad makes it easier to do every day. Results depend on your diet and overall activity, so think of it as one healthy habit rather than a quick fix.

Can I run on a walking pad?

Not really. Walking pads like the W60 Plus and T25 top out at about 4mph. If you want to jog, choose a folding treadmill like the T12B1, which goes up to 12km/h.

Are walking pads noisy?

They're much quieter than running treadmills. Merach says the W60 Plus averages 53.6dB in its own tests. A rubber mat underneath helps reduce noise for neighbours below.

How many steps can I do while working?

It depends on your speed and how long you walk. Even 30 minutes at an easy pace adds a few thousand steps to your day.
