There's nothing worse than a phone on 5% when you're out for the day, on a train or waiting for a flight. A good power bank fixes that, but the choice is huge, and the numbers on the box (mAh, W, PD, Qi2) don't make it any easier.

Anker is one of the best-known names in charging. We've picked four of its power banks for four different needs, and explained in plain English what the numbers actually mean for you.

What to look for in a power bank

A few simple numbers tell you almost everything you need to know.

  • Capacity (mAh). This is how much power it stores. 5,000mAh is roughly one top-up for most phones, 10,000mAh is about two, and 20,000mAh or more is for long trips or laptops. Real-world charges are a bit lower than the maths suggests, because some energy is lost as heat.
  • Speed (W). The higher the wattage, the faster it charges. 20W to 45W is plenty for phones. Laptops usually need 60W or more.
  • Wireless or cable. Magnetic (MagSafe or Qi2) power banks snap onto the back of newer iPhones, so there's no cable to carry. Cable charging is usually faster and works with almost any phone.
  • Built-in cables. A cable built into the power bank means you'll never leave home without one.
  • Size and weight. A 10,000mAh power bank fits in a pocket. A 25,000mAh one belongs in a bag.
  • Flying. Power banks must go in your hand luggage, not your checked bag. Most airlines allow power banks up to 100Wh without asking, which covers all four of our picks, but always check your airline's rules.

What do customers say about Anker?

Anker scores 3.8 out of 5 from more than 6,600 reviews on Trustpilot. Buyers mostly praise reliable, well-built chargers and power banks, with one saying "The product quality has always been exemplary." The main complaints are delayed deliveries, slow customer service and some warranty disputes.

Our tip: keep your order email and register your product, so a warranty claim is quicker if you ever need one.

So, which power bank should you buy?

Go for the Nano Power Bank if you want one power bank for everyday use, with a cable you can't forget.

Go for the MagGo Power Bank if you have an iPhone 12 or newer and want to charge without cables.

Go for the Laptop Power Bank if you travel with a laptop, tablet and phone and want to charge them all.

Go for the 621 Magnetic if you just want a cheap, pocket-sized top-up for your iPhone.

Common questions

What size power bank do I need?

For a day out with one phone, 5,000 to 10,000mAh is enough. For a weekend away or two devices, go for 20,000mAh. For a laptop, look for 20,000mAh or more and at least 60W output.

Can I take a power bank on a plane?

Yes, in your hand luggage. Power banks aren't allowed in checked bags. Most airlines allow power banks up to 100Wh without approval, but rules vary, so check with your airline before you fly.

Will a MagSafe power bank work with my phone?

Magnetic power banks are designed for iPhone 12 and newer. Other phones can usually use the wireless charging with a magnetic ring or case, but cable charging is often the simpler choice.

Is it bad to leave my phone charging from a power bank?

No. Modern phones stop charging when the battery is full, and the Anker Nano Power Bank includes 24/7 battery protection.

How long does a power bank take to recharge?

It depends on the size and the charger you use. Anker says the Nano Power Bank recharges fully in about 2 hours with a 30W charger, and the Laptop Power Bank reaches 30% in about 20 minutes with a 100W charger.

This is the one for long trips and working on the go. The 25,000mAh battery has three USB-C outputs at up to 100W each, enough to charge a MacBook while you top up your phone.

Two USB-C cables are built in: one retracts, and the other doubles as a carry strap. With the extra USB-A and USB-C ports, you can charge four devices at once. With a 100W charger, it refills to 30% in about 20 minutes.
